The Front Paddler Sets the Pace
The person at the front sets the stroke rhythm — the person at the back matches it. This is not optional; it is physics. When both paddlers stroke at different times the board yaws side to side and nobody goes straight. Agree on this before you get on the water.
Heavier Paddler at the Back
Weight distribution on a tandem SUP affects how the board tracks. The heavier paddler at the rear keeps the nose riding slightly higher, which reduces drag and makes the board easier to steer. A nose-heavy board wanders and requires constant correction from both paddlers.
To Turn, One Paddles Forward — One Back
The fastest way to turn a tandem board is one paddler stroking forward on one side while the other paddles backward on the opposite side. Both paddlers pulling the same side just slows you down. Once you get this coordination right, tandem SUP becomes genuinely effortless to manoeuvre.

Is a tandem paddle board good for a parent and child?
It is one of the best uses for a tandem SUP.
A child riding at the front gives the parent at the back full control of the board's direction and speed. The child gets the experience of being on the water without needing to contribute to the paddling — they can sit, kneel, or stand depending on their confidence level.
For children under 8 or under 25kg, a standard wide single board often works just as well — the child rides in front while the parent paddles from behind. A dedicated tandem board becomes more useful as the child grows and starts contributing their own strokes.
How do two people paddle a SUP board without constantly turning in circles?
The key is synchronising stroke timing — the front paddler leads, the back paddler follows the same rhythm on the same side.
When both paddlers stroke on the right side simultaneously, the board turns left — so you alternate sides together on the front paddler's cue. Once this rhythm is established, the board tracks straight with minimal correction needed.
Most tandem pairs find their rhythm within 15–20 minutes of the first session. The second session is usually much smoother than the first.
What is the weight limit on a tandem inflatable paddle board?
ABYSUP tandem SUP boards are rated for up to 500 lbs (227kg) combined — rider weight plus any gear carried on the board.
For a comfortable, stable ride, aim to use the board at no more than 80% of its rated capacity. Two 90kg adults at 180kg combined are well within range. Two larger adults at 120kg each at 240kg combined are also within range with margin to spare.
If you are close to the limit, the board will float but will sit noticeably lower and feel less responsive. In that case, consider whether a larger volume board is available in the range.
Can a tandem paddle board be used by one person?
Yes — a tandem board used by one person is essentially a very stable, very forgiving single-rider experience.
The extra width and volume make solo paddling on a tandem board easier than on a standard SUP, which is why some beginners and heavier riders prefer them even when paddling alone.
The trade-off is that a longer, wider board is slightly slower to accelerate and less manoeuvrable in tight spaces than a dedicated single board. For open water paddling with occasional solo use, a tandem board is a practical choice that covers both scenarios.
