The Wrong Paddle Is Holding You Back

Most paddlers upgrade their board and forget about the paddle — but it's your engine on the water.

Too Heavy

A heavy paddle forces your shoulders to do all the work. After 20 minutes, your arms burn, your form breaks down, and your session ends early. Paddle weight is the single biggest factor in on-water endurance.

Wrong Shaft Length

A paddle that's too short hunches you over; too long and you're dragging water. The golden rule: your paddle should be 8–12 inches above your head. Wrong sizing means wasted energy on every single stroke.

Poor Blade Angle

A blade that isn't angled correctly pushes water sideways instead of backward — less forward drive with more effort. A frustrating and exhausting experience, especially for new paddlers.

Why ABY Paddles Are Different

Engineered for More Time on the Water

Every ABY paddle is built around one idea: let the paddle do the work, not your body. From the blade shape to the grip design, every detail is tested in real conditions by real paddlers.

  • Teardrop blade shape — maximum catch, minimum flutter
  • 12° offset blade angle — natural, powerful stroke mechanics
  • 3-piece adjustable shaft — fits riders from 5'0" to 6'6"
  • Ergonomic T-grip handle — reduces wrist fatigue on long sessions
  • Featherweight construction — carbon models start at 890g

How to Size Your SUP Paddle

Choosing the correct paddle length is the most important fit decision you'll make. Here's the simple formula used by professional instructors:

  • Surfing / technical paddling: Your height + 6–8 inches
  • All-around / flatwater: Your height + 9–10 inches
  • Racing / long-distance touring: Your height + 10–12 inches
  • SUP yoga: Slightly shorter — your height + 6 inches for stability

All ABY paddles adjust across a 10" range, so one paddle works for the whole family. For kids under 4'10", we recommend our Junior Series.

SUP Paddle FAQ

What's the difference between carbon and fiberglass SUP paddles?

Carbon paddles are stiffer and significantly lighter (typically 20–30% lighter than fiberglass), which reduces arm fatigue and improves power transfer on every stroke. Fiberglass paddles are more flexible and budget-friendly — a great choice for recreational paddlers who are on the water 1–3 times per week. If you paddle more than 3 hours a week, carbon is worth the investment.

Can I use one paddle for both surfing and flatwater?

Yes — a 3-piece adjustable SUP paddle like ABY's Fiberglass or Carbon Series works well across both environments. Shorten it slightly for surf (more maneuverability) and lengthen it for flatwater (more power). The quick-adjust clamp makes this change easy in under 10 seconds.

How do I know if my paddle blade is facing the right direction?

The blade should angle forward — meaning during a stroke, the face of the blade tilts away from you. This is counterintuitive at first, but it's the correct position for efficient water catch and a clean exit. All ABY paddles are marked with an arrow on the shaft to eliminate guesswork.

Do ABY paddles float if dropped in the water?

Yes. All ABY paddle shafts are positively buoyant, so they stay at the surface if you drop them during a session. The blade material is also water-sealed to prevent waterlogging over time.
