The Biggest Reason Beginners Quit After One Session

  • It is not the paddling. It is falling in — repeatedly — because the board was too narrow.
  • A standard SUP at 30″ wide creates constant wobble for anyone who has not built core balance yet. Every small movement becomes a recovery exercise. By the end of the session, the experience feels more exhausting than fun.
  • ABYSUP beginner boards start at 32″ wide and go up to 34″. That extra width is the difference between spending your session on the board and spending it in the water.

What Makes a Good Beginner Paddle Board

Width: 32"–34"

Wider boards forgive beginner mistakes. You can shift your weight, look around, and adjust your stance without the board punishing every small movement.

Volume: 250–320L

Higher volume means more buoyancy. A board with enough volume for your weight sits higher on the water — making it easier to get up and stay up during your first sessions.

Setup: Under 10 Minutes

Our beginner SUP boards inflate to 15 PSI with an electric pump in 8–10 minutes. Fin slots in. Board is ready. The less friction between the car and the water, the more often you go.

3 Things Every Beginner Should Know Before Getting On

01

Start on Your Knees

You do not have to stand immediately. Paddle from a kneeling position first — feel how the board responds to your strokes and weight shifts before you commit to standing. Most beginners are upright within 20 minutes of doing this.

02

Look at the Horizon, Not Your Feet

Looking down shifts your weight forward and tilts the nose. Fix your eyes on a point in the distance and your body naturally finds its balance. This is the single fastest fix for beginners who keep falling forward.

03

Bend Your Knees, Not Your Back

A slight bend in the knees acts as a natural shock absorber for small waves and wakes. Standing with locked knees is the most common reason beginners lose balance when another board or boat passes nearby.

Beginner SUP FAQ

What is the best inflatable paddle board for a complete beginner?

For a complete beginner, the most important spec is width — not brand, not price.

Look for a board that is at least 32 inches wide, 10 feet long, and rated for your body weight with 20–30% margin to spare. More volume means more stability.

Our 10'6" × 33" all-around board is the most popular starting point — wide enough to be forgiving, short enough to be manageable on the water.

Is it hard to learn to paddle board?

Most people are standing and paddling in a straight line within their first 20–30 minutes on the water.

The learning curve is much shorter than surfing or kayaking. If you can balance on one leg on dry land, you can stand on a properly sized inflatable SUP.

The key variable is board width — a wider board forgives beginner weight shifts that would tip a narrower board immediately.

How long does it take to inflate a beginner paddle board?

With an electric pump, 8–10 minutes from unrolled to fully inflated at 15 PSI.

With a hand pump, 15–20 minutes. We recommend an electric pump for anyone who plans to paddle regularly — the time saving adds up fast over a season.

All ABYSUP boards come with a dual-action hand pump. Electric pumps are available as an add-on accessory.

What PSI should a beginner inflate their paddle board to?

15 PSI is the correct inflation pressure for most inflatable SUP boards including all ABYSUP models.

Under-inflated boards feel soft and wobbly underfoot — which beginners often mistake for the board being too narrow. If your board feels unstable, check the PSI before assuming it is a size problem.

Do not exceed the maximum PSI printed on your board. For ABYSUP boards, the maximum is 18 PSI — but 15 PSI is the sweet spot for rigidity and comfort.

Can I use a beginner paddle board in the ocean?

Yes — flat or mildly choppy ocean conditions are fine for a beginner board.

Avoid surf zones, strong currents, and conditions with waves over 1 foot until you are comfortable with basic balance and steering. Open bays, calm coastal inlets, and flat-water beaches are ideal starting environments.

All ABYSUP boards are built with UV-stabilised PVC and saltwater-safe hardware — rinse with fresh water after each salt water session to extend the board's lifespan.
