The contact cement has a shelf life. Once you’ve opened the tube, squeeze out any air before recapping and store it at room temperature. An unopened tube stays viable for roughly 2–3 years. How to Know If It’s a Valve Leak vs. a Puncture

How to Patch Your Board: The Complete 15-Minute Repair
Now that you know what each item does, here’s the full repair sequence from start to finish. The active work takes about 10–15 minutes. The cure time is 12–24 hours. Plan to let the board rest overnight before your next session.
Step 1: Find the Leak
Inflate the board to full pressure. Mix dish soap with water in a spray bottle (or just wet your hand with soapy water) and wipe it across the suspect area. Bubbles will appear at the leak point. Mark it with a piece of tape or a pen so you don’t lose it once you deflate.
Step 2: Deflate and Prep
Fully deflate the board. Lay it flat on a clean, dry surface — a garage floor, a tarp, even a picnic table works. Clean the damaged area following the surface prep sequence from the previous section: wipe, sand lightly, wipe again, let dry.
Step 3: Cut the Patch
Cut your PVC patch to size. Round the corners — square corners are stress concentration points that are more likely to start peeling over time. Aim for at least 2 cm of overlap around every edge of the damage. If in doubt, cut bigger. You can always trim later; you can’t make a patch larger once it’s bonded.
Step 4: Apply Cement to Both Surfaces
Apply a thin, even layer of contact cement to both the board surface and the back of the patch. This is the key principle of contact cement — both surfaces need a coat. Let them sit for 3–5 minutes until the cement feels tacky but not wet. If you press your knuckle to it and it feels sticky without leaving residue, it’s ready.

Carefully align the patch over the damage and press down firmly from the centre outward. Push out any air bubbles. Use a credit card, the back of a spoon, or the flat side of the valve wrench as a roller to apply firm, even pressure across the entire patch. Apply heavy pressure for at least 60 seconds.
Step 6: Cure
Leave the board flat and deflated for 12–24 hours. Don’t inflate it, don’t move it, don’t test it. The molecular bond needs time to fully set. After 24 hours, inflate to normal pressure and check the patch edges with soapy water. No bubbles? You’re done.

Frequently Asked Questions About SUP Repair Kits
Can I use the repair kit on an inflated board in an emergency?
Technically, you can apply a temporary patch to an inflated board to finish a session — but it won’t hold long-term. Contact cement needs a flat, stable surface to create a proper bond, and the tension in an inflated board works against the adhesive as it cures. If you’re out on the water and get a slow leak, paddle back to shore, deflate, and do the repair properly.
If the leak is fast enough that the board is going soft while you’re on it, get off the board and swim it back. A deflating SUP is still buoyant enough to use as a flotation aid, but don’t stand on a board that’s losing rigidity — your weight will accelerate the air loss and you’ll end up in the water anyway.
How long does a patch repair actually last?
A properly applied patch — with clean surfaces, correct cement application, and a full 24-hour cure — is effectively permanent. I’ve seen boards in our testing fleet with patches from three or four years ago that are still holding at full pressure. The PVC-to-PVC molecular bond doesn’t degrade over time the way a surface adhesive would.
The most common reason patches fail is rushing the prep. If the surface wasn’t clean, if the cement wasn’t given time to go tacky, or if the board was inflated before the cure was complete, the patch may peel. If that happens, don’t just re-glue over the failed patch — peel it off completely, clean the surface again, and start fresh.
The contact cement in my kit has dried out. Can I buy a replacement?

My board is losing air but I can’t find a puncture. What else could it be?
Three possibilities beyond a hull puncture: a loose valve (tighten with the wrench — this is the most common culprit), a faulty valve seal (the internal spring mechanism can wear over time), or temperature-related pressure drop (which isn’t a leak at all).
That last one catches a lot of people off guard. Air contracts when it cools. If you inflate your board in the sun and then paddle into cooler water, you may lose 1–2 PSI from temperature change alone. This is normal physics, not a defect. Re-pump to your target pressure and carry on. A board that drops from 15 PSI to 13 PSI over a two-hour session on a cool morning is behaving exactly as expected.
Should I bring the repair kit with me every time I paddle?
